Register for NARSA Sharp Skills Competition, September 15, 2018

LOUISVILLE, KY – Are you ready to compete in the industry's only hands-on competition? The event is open to all and will be held at Roppel Industries in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, September 15 and will be a part of the 2018 HD Conference. Register today.

Competition Rules: “Sharp Skills 2018”

Hands-On Segment

  1. Solder on Copper Brass Tank
    1. Competition will be judged by the amount of time to solder a tank, filler neck and hose connection of an automotive copper brass radiator.
    2. Contest will require soft soldering (60/40) of new connection and filler neck on a new tank to a new header. One side of a radiator only.
    3. Core is specially designed to accommodate one side only.
    4. Contestants may tin components or not. It is their choice.
    5. Contestants will be required to insert test plugs and test it for leaks as part of the timed competition.
    6. All materials and tools will be provided. Competition begins on judge’s signal and ends once the finished unit is submerged in water.
    7. Test will be for one minute at 15 PSI.
    8. Any leaks will disqualify the entry.
    9. Best time wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status.
2. Aluminum Heater Repair
    1. Competition will be judged by the amount of time it will take to repair a hole in the tank, a puncture in a tube and a slit in a tube on an aluminum automotive heater core.
    2. Timed competition begins after contestant lights and adjusts torch and indicates to judge that he or she is ready. It is completed after the unit is submerged in water for testing.
    3. Choice of oxy-acetylene or natural gas fuel are available. Mini torches and Johnson Day Rod 820s will be provided.
    4. Winner will be determined by best time in which all holes are repaired. Timed event begins with contestant’s ready “call” and ends when unit is under water.
    5. Unit must withstand one -minute submersion test at 15 PSI.
    6. Any leaks and the entry are disqualified.
    7. Tie breaker will be determined by fewest fins destroyed.
    8.  Best time wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status.

3. Bolt On Assembly
    1. Competition will be judged by the amount of time it will take to assemble one tank to one side of a bolt on (bolt-up) radiator.
    2. New bolts, new nuts, old style (black) gasket tape will be used on a supplied core. Contestant will be able to attach tank securely to one side of the core without leaks.
    3. Cordless electric drills and pneumatic drills will be available as will typical hand tools and test plugs.
    4. Competition begins on the signal of judge once the contestant calls: “Ready.”
    5. Timed competition ends one minute after completed unit has been under water. Contestant will be able to adjust or tightened during the one-minute submersion.
    6. Any leaks and the entry are disqualified.
    7. Best time wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status

Knowledge Segment

4. Core Measurement

    1. Contestant will measure a core for the required physical dimensions in order to have a replacement ordered.
    2. Measurements include: height, depth, width, fins per inch, rows of tubes, tube spacing, bolt hole pattern, size of bolt holes.
    3. No time limit. Judged by accuracy of measurements.
    4. Best score wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status.

5. Fan Measurement

    1.  Contestant will measure physical dimensions of a fan.
    2. Measurements will include: number of blades, blade angle, diameter of blade, size and number of bolt holes, desired fan direction with air flow in face.
    3. No time limit. Judged by accuracy of measurements.
    4. Best score wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status.

6. Tube and Shell Heat Exchanger Measurement

    1. Contestant will measure a heat exchanger for required physical dimensions to order a replacement.
    2. Measurements will include: unit diameter, unit length, tube pattern, OD and ID of tubes, number of tubes, number of baffles, baffle arrangement, materials, identifying manufacturer by the bonnet or casing indicia.
    3. No time limit. Judged by accuracy of measurements.
    4. Best score wins and will be counted towards Grand Champion and Champion status.
